Athens is planning to roll out smart ticketing for the city’s public transport this autumn, according to the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OSCE).
The president of the OSCE, Tasos Tastanis, said that the electronic ticket project is in the second of three phases of implementation, and that the pilot will commence in September.
‘The electronic ticketing system will provide many advantages to passengers, including access to many points of sale for purchases, and the use of the smartcard for single tickets on all public transport,’ he said.
Tastanis added that the change would introduce fairer charges through new pricing policies and products (such as tickets based on zone travel, weekly cards and family cards).
The new system will also remove the need for paper tickets, increase flexibility and convenience for non-regular users and tourists, and provide security in case of damage, loss or theft.
‘It will allow for better transport planning on the basis of actual demand and improve the distribution of income among transport operators,’ he added.
