Amtrak Service moves to new multimodal center in Alton

Amtrak passenger trains have started using the new Alton Regional Multimodal Transport Center located northwest of the former station. The new station, part of a major upgrade of the St. Louis-to-Chicago Amtrak corridor, replaces the 89-year-old Alton depot at 3400 College Avenue about two miles away. The old station will likely be demolished this year.
The new Alton Regional Multimodal Transport Center was designed to accommodate higher-speed trains. The modern center offers ample parking, free Wi-Fi, enclosed bicycle lockers and connections to Madison County Transit. The station also provides a spacious waiting room with an exhibit that details rail history in Alton and the region.
“We are excited about this move, which is the biggest station improvement on the corridor since the opening of the new station in Normal (Illinois) in 2012,” said Marc Magliari, spokesman for Amtrak government affairs and corporate communications in Chicago.
