AlpTransit announced that, over the next months, Ceneri Base Tunnel, linking Camorino to Vezia (south of Switzerland), on 15.4 km, will be equipped with rail infrastructure systems, such as the tracks, the catenary, the power supply system and the traction system, as well as safety and communications systems and train control systems. In 2020, Ceneri Base Tunnel will be ready to launch rail transport services.
AlpTransit, a subsidiary 100% owned by Swiss Railways (SBB) was established to deal with the construction of the two tunnels, Gotthard and Ceneri, that cross by rail the base of the Alps.
After the commissioning of Gotthard base tunnel, in June 2016, Ceneri Base Tunnel is now the most comprehensive project of rail tunnelling in Switzerland.
Initial works take place at the northern end of the eastern tunnel, in Vigana, were 200 meters of ballastless track have already been installed. Quality controls are currently carried out. When these check-ups are completed, the installation of the rail track will continue to the southern portal located in Vezia. Just like Gotthard Base Tunnel, Ceneri Tunnel will also include the construction of two tunnels with a single track, at approx. 40 meters of one another and connected at every 325 m through crossings.
