Construction of the new standard gauge line from Malaba was officially launched by the presidents of Rwanda, Uganda and South Sudan.
Ugandan President Museveni said that there will be much better transport and cheaper electricity. Rwandan President Kagame urged everyone involved “to keep up the momentum to enable the process of regional integration.” The new line is expected to reduce Mombasa to Kampala goods journey times to two days, by enabling speeds of 120km/h. It is hoped to have the line to Kampala operational by 2018.
