Adif launched tender for maintenance locomotive procurement

maintenance locomotives Adif, the rail infrastructure manager of Spain has launched a tender for the procurement of 15 maintenance locomotives for the Iberian and metric gauge networks.

EUR 118.7 million is the value of the project under which the winner must deliver 12 locomotives for the 1,668 mm-gauge rail lines and 3 locomotives for the 1,000 mm gauge network.

The contract which includes the provision of maintenance services for a period of 8 years also covers the supply and installation of security and communications systems, as well as a minimum stock of fleet parts to guarantee the management of the maintenance.

The diesel – electric vehicles must be able to run at a speed of up to 160 km/h for the Iberian gauge network and up to 70 km/h for the metric gauge network.

The locomotives will be used for exploration work only for Iberian gauge lines, maintenance works and snow removal work, and train rescue.

On 1st March the Spanish Council of Ministers authorised the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) to tender through Adif a EUR 104 million contract for the acquisition of 15 maintenance locomotives.

In October 2019, Adif awarded the consortium of Stadler and Erion a EUR 115 million contract to deliver 22 diesel-electric rescue locomotives. The contract also included the delivery of maintenance services for 8 years. The four-axle vehicles which can haul maintenance trains that weigh 600 tonnes can run at a speed of 160 km/h in weather conditions ranging from 45˚C to -25˚C. These new locomotives will have two drivers cabs and will be equipped with both ETCS and ASFA (Anuncio de Señales y Frenado Automático), the Spanish automatic train protection system.

Regarding the rolling stock procurement, Adif has decided to award two contracts totalling EUR 21.3 million for locomotives which perform maneuvering and last-mile services at freight terminals and related facilities, as well as the provision of services for the maintenance of the railway infrastructure.

The five-year contracts were awarded to Renfe Manufacturing and Maintenance for the maintenance of the 310 series locomotive fleet for the Eastern, South and Central regions and for the same series for the Northwest, North and Northeast areas.
