Ghana’s Minister of Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, and Rajeev Mehrotra, the chairman of RITES, an Indian state-owned company signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote long term bilateral cooperation in transport and infrastructure development projects in Ghana.
The MoU “will help RITES to enhance its presence in Ghana, while Ghana will be benefited by technical knowledge, experience, training and resources of Indian Railways and RITES,” Mehrotra said at the signing ceremony.
Ghana intends to develop its railway transport sector by rebuilding and modernise the infrastructure.
The country intends to reconstruct a 330-km line in the eastern part to support the bauxite industry. The USD 1 billion project envisages the conversion of the 1067mm-gauge Accra – Kumasi line and a 24-km section from Achimota to Tema.
In the same time, Ghana is currently working to rehabilitate the Kojokrom – Tarkwa line and to build a standard-gauge line from Kojokrom to Manso.
In May, the ministry has announced that four bidders were shortlisted for a project which involve the construction and operation of a new line linking Ghana and Burkina Faso. It is expected that the line will have a length of 1,000 km from Tema port to Ho, Hohoe, Yendi, Tamale and Paga, at the border with Burkina Faso, having a connection with the Ouagadougou capital.
