Trafikverket, the Swedish infrastructure manager, signed the first contract for the installation and testing of 150 rail cabinets, located on the Gällivare-Norway border line. The contract is part of the ERTMS installation project on the Malmbanan line (Kiruna in Sweden-Narvik in Norway) for freight traffic.
Iron ore is transported on this route, mainly to Norway. Extraction and export of iron ore is an important branch of the economy of Sweden.
The 150 rail cabinets contain signaling, power supply and telecommunication equipment for the ERTMS system.
Infranord will conduct the installation of three different sized devices on the Malmbanan line, one of Sweden’s oldest and busiest railway lines. The contract awarded to Infranord amounts to SEK 44 million (EUR 4.15 million). It is valid until December 2021, with the option of extending it for another year for the Boden-Gällivare rail section.
As part of the introduction of ERTMS on the Malmabanan line, Trafikverket also has a simplification and digitisation program for the signaling system, in the idea of reducing costs. Thus, 760 mechanical switches will be replaced with 160 computerized track switches.
ERTMS deployment will also replace current signaling systems on the rail line with signaling systems installed on-board the locomotive, making them more efficient and easier to maintain.
