The major construction of the Newcastle LRT track will be completed on time, by the end of September, with tests scheduled to start next month, NSW Government announced.
From October 2018, the light rail vehicles will test the light rail system around the city centre. This testing phase will ensure the system is fully functional and safe to carry passengers from early 2019.
“It was just 12 months ago when construction started on a 350 metre section of Newcastle’s light rail at Civic, and here we are today with the track all but finished and the first of the fleet here for testing,” Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said.
Major Newcastle Light Rail construction started in September 2017.
In April 2017, the authorities announced that Newcastle will be the only city in Australia with a majority wire free light rail system, as the LRVs will be fitted with on board energy storage as part of the changes, to remove the overhead wires and preserve the city’s heritage.
The Newcastle Light Rail will be a high capacity, frequent service through the city centre designed to help reduce traffic congestion. It will have 2.7 km served by six stops– at Wickham, Honeysuckle, Civic, Crown Street, Market Street and Pacific Park.
