The Government of Western Australia has announced the shortlisted consortia for the construction and supply of 246 new C-series railcars for Perth.
The three consortia which have been shortlisted to participate in a tender for the supply of the new trains are:
• Alstom Transport Australia Pty Ltd
• Momentum West (CAF and UGL)
• EDI Rail – Bombardier Transportation Pty Ltd
The winner will be selected in early 2019 and a key consideration will be their ability and commitment to manufacture or assemble 50 per cent of railcars in Western Australia. “The key target of 50 per cent will help revitalise WA’s manufacturing industry and put WA jobs first,” Premier Mark McGowan said.
Under the first stage, 102 new railcars (17 six-car sets) should be delivered in 2021, which will enter services on Metronet network. The second order, included in the tender, envisages 144 railcars (24 six-car sets), which will replace the ageing A-series railcars. They are expected to be delivered between 2023 and 2028.
In addition, the government selected Bellevue as the preferred site for the new Metronet railcar manufacturing facility which will be used to assemble the new trains.
The proposed manufacturing facility will also be co-located with the Public Transport Authority’s next railcar depot, where Transperth will carry out maintenance of the broader train fleet.
Located just one kilometre from the historic Midland Workshops, the new production facility site in Bellevue will bring more employment opportunities to the area.
“The Midland-Bellevue area will be involved in the production of new trains and their ongoing maintenance works, creating sustainable local jobs for local people,” Transport Minister Rita Saffiotti said.
Approval for the facility is expected in the coming month from the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, with construction to start in 2019.
Metronet is Perth’s most ambitious public transport programme, which will offer rail transport links between the capital and its suburbs. The first phase of the project envisages the delivery of 72 km of new rail links served by 18 new stations.
