Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsya) plans to buy ten intercity trains in the period 2018-2020. The announcement has been made by the company’s Chairman of the Board, Yevgeny Kravtsov, and the strategy has been presented to the ministers of Kiev Government.
According to Kravtsov, Ukrzaliznytsya could purchase the intercity trains from both local manufacturers, and from the international rolling stick manufacturers.
“We are currently drafting the documentation on the technical specifications that we will require from rolling stock manufacturers”, added Yevgeny Kravtsov.
Since the introduction of high-speed intercity transport (able to run trains at speeds of 160 km/h) in Ukraine in 2012, the Intercity and Intercity + trains carried 15.5 million passengers.
According to the figures presented by Ukrainian Railways, in the first nine months of the year, 4 million passengers used the Intercity and Intercity + services.
The trains run on routes such as Kiev-Kharkiv, Kiev-Zaporozhye, Kiev-Lviv, Kiev-Lviv (but using a different route, via Ternopil), Kiev-Peremyshl, Kiev-Odessa, Kiev-Krivoy Rog and Kiev-Konstantinovka.
Ukrainian Railways announced the launch of new transport routes as of December 2017, considering connections such as Odessa-Dnipro, Odessa-Lviv, but also the extension of Kiev- Zaporozhye route to Melitopol.
