“The finalisation of the rail link between Sines (Portugal) and Caia (Spain) will reduce the costs of Portuguese transport operators by 30%. Also, rail freight traffic between the two countries will increase, thus encouraging the development of several logistics terminals along the route”, believes Pedro Marques, Portugal’s Minister of Development.
According to him, one of the new logistics terminals could be built in Pampilhosa, located in Aveiro region, Portugal.
The connection between Sines and Caia is part of Aveiro-Salamanca-Medina del Campo section of the Atlantic Corridor. The Portuguese Government plans to invest EUR 700 million to complete the north line. Several track engineering works are carried out for this purpose, including the connection of Beira Baixa and Beira Alta railways. Beira Alta railway connects Portugal to Spain’s rail network.
The upgraded infrastructure will allow 750-m long cargo trains to run on this corridor. Also, important Portuguese ports, such as Leixoes and Sines will be connected to the Spanish rail market.
