RZD commissioned a new railway bridge on Sakhalin

Russian Railways commissioned a new rail bridge, including its conversion from narrow gauge to wide gauge, on 49 km of the Korsakov-Nogliki line of the Far Eastern Railway (Sakhalin Island).
The length of the rail bridge is 25 meters. In the course of the construction, additional approaches to the bridge were required, such as laying of two culverts.
Since the start of the project to reorganize the Sakhalin railway, 56 new bridges have been built on the network. The project involves the replacement of the old structures, constructed between 1905 and 1945, due to their wear and tear but also to increase the network capacity.
Sakhalin is preparing for the final phase of the conversion of island’s railways to a wide gauge network (1520 mm), from narrow gauge (1067 mm). Currently, 625 km had been converted, from an 806 km network. Within the next years, Russian Railways will replace all 70 old bridges and will install modern hydraulic structures.
RZD plans to complete the conversion project until 2020, for which, the company and Sakhalin Oblast signed in September a cooperation agreement.
