India’s Ministry of Railways and Deutsche Bahn signed, on 11th October, a joint declaration for the elaboration of the feasibility study on existing Chennai-Kazipet rail corridor. The scope of the project is to increase the speed of passenger trains to 200 km/h. The cost of the feasibility study will be shared 50.50 percent by the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India and Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The project is envisaged to consist of three phases to be carried out over a 22 month period with the objectives to provide the definition for three demand-based upgrade scenarios, the selection of the preferred upgrade scenario for “semi high speed” on the corridor, based on analysis of respective operations and economic-financial impact. Under the third phase, the company will have to elaborate the preferred scenario, and reference design and technical tender document.
The Chennai-Kazipet rail corridor has a length of 643 km and links India’s Southern Railway network with country’s South Central Railway. The entire corridor is electrified.
Currently, on the line, trains are limited to run with an average speed of 57 km/h. The implementation of the project will allow trains to run at speeds of 200 km/h.
In May 2016, the two sides signed a Protocol for the development of India’s railway network, including the redevelopment of the existing stations on mainlines.
