Czech Rep: Štěpánov railway station repair works completed

Czech railway network operator SŽDC completed repairs of the railway station in Štěpánov, following an investment of CZK 3.3 million (EUR 127,000). The construction also included adaptations of unused premises and the waiting room for passengers. Roofing of the building was also completely repaired, and the original station designation has been changed as well.
”This year, SŽDC carried out repairs of the wiring system, heating, public lavatories and savings against earth humidity in Štěpánov. The building’s roof was completely repaired; more specifically this included exchanging the roofing, plumber components and repairs of damaged components of metal and roof formwork. Unused premises on the ground floor including the waiting room for passengers were also adapted”, said Tomáš Drmola, Deputy Director General of SŽDC for Assets Management. The original station designation has been replaced by a new one with use of modern LED technology.
The original passenger building dates from 1845 and during the years it continued to grow. However, it kept its original architectonical shape of a railway building constructed from fair-face brickwork which was more capable of resisting weather conditions within railway premises and was less demanding on maintenance. The railway station underwent complex reconstruction works during 2002–2004. After 2008, when a train dispatcher stopped working at the station, the cash desk was closed as well. In the following years, the unused building started to decay. SŽDC has been dealing with the municipality’s representatives on possible use of the railway station for hobby free-time activities of the inhabitants. Further premises will be offered for commercial use. It has also agreed with the municipality upon reopening the waiting room for passengers.
