The Viking shuttle container train running from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea carried 38% more cargo in January-August 2017, as compared to the same period of 2016. The service handled 26,000 TEU containers in the first eight months of this year, up from 19,000 in January-August 2016, Lithuanian rail company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai reported.
Approx. 12,100 TEU were delivered from Lithuania to Belarus (+37%) and 10,200 were brought back (+22%), while 1,100 TEU were taken from Ukraine to Belarus (+400%) and 2,500 were delivered back (+200%).
The countries involved in the project, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia and Azerbaijan, decided to keep the tariffs unchanged next year.
