The supervisory board of the Estonian railway infrastructure company Eesti Raudtee has approved the construction works for building a railway on the Riisipere-Turba section of the track bed where railway traffic came to a halt in 2004. “The state placed an obligation on us and we intend to fulfill it in an appropriate and prompt manner,” the chairman of the supervisory board of Eesti Raudtee, Priit Rohumaa, said.
According to tentative estimates the track section could be completed by the end of 2019. The preparatory works include setting out and obtaining approvals for the terms of reference and the preliminary design, conducting an environmental impact assessment and construction surveys, and establishing a right of superficies. A this point eight million euros has been earmarked for the construction of the 6.5-kilometer section of track from Riisipere, the current end station of the former Tallinn-Haapsalu railroad, to Turba.
The railway connection between Tallinn and Haapsalu ended in summer 2004, when Haapsalu Raudtee OU, the owner of the Riisipere-Haapsalu section of the railway, started removing rails from the track.
