USD 1 billion for Western Australia’s Metronet

The Western Australian government has allocated, under the 2017-2018 budget, AUD 1.34 billion (USD 1 billion) over the next four year for the Metronet project.
“We’re building Metronet and in the process delivering our election commitments. It will create thousands of jobs and will deliver world-class public transport across Perth,” Premier Mark McGowan said.
Under the budget for Metronet it will be allotted USD 326.28 million for Forrestfield-Airport Link, with completion expected in late 2020; USD 430 million Thornlie-Cockburn Link; 417.5 million Yanchep Rail Extension; USD 16.7 million allocated for detailed planning and design work of the Morley-Ellenbrook Line and Byford Rail Extension; USD 56.2 million to remove the Denny Avenue level crossing and begin planning for the future removal of level crossings at Caledonian Avenue, Oats Street and Wharf Street; USD 22.6 million towards the Midland Station Project; planning for the new Karnup Station on the Mandurah Line, as part of USD 81.3 million committed towards new stations and existing station upgrades; and a new multi-storey car park at Mandurah Station, with USD 12.9 million allocated.
In order to allow increased service frequencies on the future Metronet network, USD 5.9 million has been allocated to undertake planning for an automatic train control system. This would replace the existing signalling system and allow trains to run more often.
“Metronet is our long-term plan to not just reduce traffic congestion, but to connect our suburbs and drive sustainable new developments,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.
