The New York City Transit Authority (MTA New York City Transit) has improved passenger information with new real-time train arrival displays at all stations serving the E metro and G metrolines, as it continues to push forward an accelerated schedule for installing the displays at all lettered line stations by the end of 2017.
These new LCD displays use beacon technology, which involves low-energy Bluetooth beacons installed on each train set and on each platform. The train arrival information is displayed on easy-to-read screens at those stations. This innovative technology has a small footprint and can be easily deployed, making it ideal for installing in stations where countdown clocks had not yet been installed.
This accelerated effort to bring real-time train arrival information to the rest of the system is part of the MTA’s Subway Action Plan to stabilize and improve the system and lay the foundation for modernizing the New York City Subway. A key component of the plan called for improved customer communication so that customers can be fully informed of changes to regular service, delays or emergency situations.
