Spanish rolling stock manufacturer, CAF, has delivered a New Generation Sprinter electric multiple-unit at Rail Tec Arsenal Centre head office in Vienna to be tested in the climate chamber. The train is built for Dutch Railways.
New Generation Sprinter is currently tested at temperatures between 25 and +40 degrees Celsius to evaluate the performance of components, including automatic couplings, doors and retractable steps. A first such electric multiple-unit has been previously tested at Velim Railway Testing Centre in the Czech Republic.
Dutch Railways said testing has been successful and CAF will undergo minor changes, such as the modification of the heating system of the main lights of the EMU, before delivering the trains.
According to a contract signed between the two parties in March this year, CAF will deliver 118 suburban trains of this class based on the Civity platform developed by the supplier. The contract signed for the 118 EMUs is worth EUR 510 million. 68 trains will have 3 coaches, while the other 50 will have 4 coaches.
The whole rolling stock fleet will be operational as of December 2018. The order is part of a major project, worth EUR 2.5 billion, developed by Dutch Railways, a project which stipulates the extension and modernisation of the rolling stock fleet.
