Spanish company designs a station on Moscow’s Third Interchange Circuit

Bustren, a Spanish company, used Madrid metro concept to develop the design of Nizhniye Mnyovniki metro station in Moscow. The Timur Bashkayev Architectural Bureau has won the competition enabling them to design the new station.
“Spanish engineering company Bustren originally planned to build Nizhniye Mnyovniki using ideas from the Madrid metro, in a coast-like way – with a single two-lane tunnel and two side platforms. However, with the help of the general contractor Mosinzhproekt it was decided to build the station the “Moscow way” – with a single platform,” Moscow’s Chief Architect Sergei Kuznetsov said.
The Nizhniye Mnyovniki metro station will be situated on the Third Interchange Circuit and is scheduled to be open in 2019.
Despite the fact that the construction technology has changed, the overall architectural concept remain to the original designs used in the competition. According to the architects, the use of light and a combination of materials will play a key role. The main material will be concrete – pigmented, textured and rough, which will brighten up red structural elements making them more visible.
The platform will be divided into several functional areas. Illumination and navigation panels will be in the central part, where the passenger flow is heaviest. The quieter parts of the platform will have sitting areas. There the passengers will find illuminated niches with benches. The edge of the platform will have installed lights; the safety buffer will be well-lit.
The entrance halls will be decorated with thick concrete and the biggest hall will join two stair approaches leading into a pedestrian underpass. Free space between the stair approaches will later get a waiting area and commercial facilities.
The competition to design Nizhniye Mnyovniki and Terekhovo metro stations on the Third Interchange Circuit took place last year. The Timur Bashkayev Architectural Bureau has presented the best design for the Nizhniye Mnyovniki station.
The Third Interchange Circuit will be the second Circle Line of the Moscow Metro, and it will be located 10 km from the first Circle Line. The whole line will have a length of 61 km with consisting of 30 stations. It will have 17 interchanges with operating metro lines, 7 with radial railways and 2 with the Moscow Central Circle (MCC). The first section is 10.5 km long with 6 stations will be soon opened and for the southern section of the line, Moscow launched the construction works in July.
