Íñigo de la Serna, the Spanish Minister of Public Works, announced the allocation of EUR 1.17 billion for the construction of a high-speed railway on Valencia- Castellón section, part of the Mediterranean Corridor.
The project of the 62-km railway has an estimated cost of EUR 1.17 billion and will allow passenger trains to run at a maximum speed of 350 km/h. Under the current planning of the Ministry of Public Works, works will be tendered in 2019.
The project, together with the construction of the rail tunnel that will cross Valencia, will manage to reduce travel time from Barcelona to Valencia to two hours, from Barcelona to Alicante to three hours, and from Barcelona to Castellón to 1 h, 35 minutes.
At the same time, the railway will create the proper conditions for competitive, faster and more efficient freight transport services.
Thus, the cargo passing through Valencia and Castellón to reach Catalonia (Spain’s autonomous community) and France will transit the Mediterranean Corridor (corresponding to the Freight Rail Corridor 6).
The announcement made by minister de la Serna is a new step in the development of the Mediterranean Corridor, a strategic project for the Spanish Government due to its high social and economic contribution for which EUR 13.5 billion of the estimated EUR 17.4 billion investment have been granted so far.
