Iran plans to complete the construction of two rail sections within the framework of the North-South project by September, according to Said Mohammadzadeh, head of the Iranian Railways. The two sections are 162 km Gazvin-Resht and 10 km Astara (Iran) – Astara (Azerbaijan).
Another section of the North-South corridor, Resht-Astara (175 km), could be completed within three years with the help of a loan from Azerbaijan. Negotiations on financing the construction for this section are already at the final stage, Said Mohammadzadeh added. The construction of the Resht-Astara section will cost Iran $1.1 billion. A part of these funds, $500 million, could be attracted as a loan from the Azerbaijani government.
The International North-South Transport Corridor will connect Northern Europe with Southeast Asia and will serve as a link connecting the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.
