The Serbian government plans to start discussions with Macedonia and Greece concerning a project for the overhaul of a railway line connecting Belgrade to Greece’s Piraeus port, according to infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic. The talks will concern a link of the Belgrade-Budapest railway line to Piraeus which will improve connections between Greece and Europe through Serbia and will be funded with a loan from China.
The reconstruction of the Stara Pazova-Novi Sad section of the railway line, financed with the proceeds from a USD 800 million (EUR 715.4 million) loan extended by Russia to state-run railway operator Zeleznice Srbije in 2013, will start this July.
According to previous plans, the overhaul of the Belgrade-Stara Pazova railway section, funded with a USD 297.6 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, will start in November.
China, Serbia and Hungary signed a memorandum of understanding for the reconstruction of the 370 km rail route in December 2014.
