Poland’s railway infrastructure manager PKP PLK and Porr Polska Construction signed a PLN 485 million (EUR 114 million) contract for the modernisation of Poznań – Piła rail section, on the existing railway line Nr. 354. The construction period is 32 months and will begin in the spring of 2018 and will be completed in 2019.
“The modernisation of Poznań – Piła rail section is an important project. It will improve the rail transport services and will develop the freight transport across Wielkopolska region. Under the National Railway Strategy, for Wielkopolska region, the investments are valuated at PLN 5 billion (EUR 1.2 billion),” Arnold Bresch, Member of Board for Investment Implementation of PKP PLK said.
The modernisation covers 142 km of track, overhauling 91 turnouts and the partial renovation of the catenary. On top of this there will be 12 bridges, 4 underpasses and 91 water conduits. Furthermore, 76 level crossings, 37 platforms and other buildings will be removed or newly built. The control and safety technology systems will be modernised, whereby two new electronic signal boxes will be installed.
“In the last five years our Polish team has repeatedly proven their competency in railway construction. The upcoming modernisation of railway line 354 shows how much the market values our expertise”, said Karl-Heinz Strauss, CEO of PORR.
The trains currently run at speeds of between 50 and 100 km/h and, following the modernisation works they will be able to travel at up to 120 km/h for passenger trains and up to 80 km/h for freight.
The project on the modernisation of Nr. 354 Poznań Główny POD – Chodzież – Piła Główna line is part of Wielkopolska Regional Operational Programme 2014-2020.
