Germany: Kaiserstuhlbahn electrification contract awarded

Powerlines Group GmbH has been awarded by SWEG Schienenwege GmbH via its Germany subsidiary the contract to electrify the Kaiserstuhlbahn line. SPL Powerlines Germany has been contracted for the electrification of the 37.6 km section of line between Riegel-Malterdingen, Gottenheim and Breisach. The project has been divided up into three construction lots, with completion scheduled for December 2018. SPL Powerlines Germany GmbH is joining forces with SPL Powerlines Austria for the implementation of this large-scale project.
Large sections of the local railway lines in the area of Freiburg in Baden-Württemberg, Southern Germany, are to be reconstructed and expanded as part of the ‘Breisgau-S-Bahn 2020 local mass transit concept’. One aspect of this programme is that the Kaiserstuhlbahn is now to be electrified. Opened in 1894/95, today the Kaiserstuhlbahn line is a platform for local public transport, freight traffic and a museum rail operation featuring the ‘Rebenbummler‘ train. Electrification of the line has become a necessity for future operations as it will enable the trains on the Kaiserstuhlbahn to be linked up with the soon-to-be electric trains of the Breisacher Bahn, and the already electrified trains of the Höllentalbahn.
The scope of the contract includes the construction of 91 in-situ-concrete foundations, the installation of 412 pile-driven large-diameter tube foundations and 305 drilled large-diameter tube foundations, to be installed at minimised noise levels out of consideration for the local residents.
