Philippines’ House of Representatives Speaker, Pantaleon Alvarez, announced that the implementation of Mindanao Railway project will start next year.
The Congress is working for the provision of the funding in the General Appropriation Act to be used for the acquisition of the properties for the project.
The project involves 2000 km of railway lines valuated at USD 9 billion and it will be built in six phases. According to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), the feasibility study of the project has been completed by JICA and will be presented to the NEDA Investment Coordination Committee (ICC) by the third quarter this year.
The new railway system will link the cities of Davao, General Santos, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato, and Malaybalay.
Under the first phase, it will be constructed the railway link from Davao del Sur to Davao del Norte, the second phase involves the connection Davao del Norte to Butuan City, the third phase will link Butuan and Cagayan de Oro and the fourth phase envisages the line from Cagayan de Oro to Iligan and Zamboanga peninsula. The loop from Cagayan de Oro passing Cotabato to Davao will complete the rail system in Mindanao.
Late last month, the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) reported that the feasibility study of the Mindanao Railway Project has been completed and will be presented to the NEDA Investment Coordination Committee (ICC) by the third quarter this year.
