On April 11th, the Mayor of Izmir city, Aziz Kocaoğlu, inaugurated the 8.8km Karşiyaka – Mavişehir light rail line, thus, adding 14 stations to the city’s light rail network.
Production of Hyundai Rotem low-floor tram sets, to be used on two tram lines in Izmir, has been completed at Eurotem (Hyundai Rotem’s European unit) plant in Adapazarı jointly with Turkish State Railways (TCDD) subsidiary Tüvasaş, which produces passenger railcars. Services are operated, on the new line, by a fleet of 17 light rail vehicles. Construction on the rail infrastructure of the new line began in April 2015 and civil works were carried out by the Turkish construction company Gülermak.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality placed a USD 80 million order in 2014 for the vehicles, which will be used on two new light rail lines serving the districts of Konak and Karșiyaka. The 32m-long five-section bidirectional LRVs will accommodate up to 285 passengers.
The second line, Fahrettin Altay Meydani – Konak – Halkapinar, line will be 12.6km long with 19 stations and a fleet of 21 vehicles.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has received preliminary planning approval for an extension to Çiğli Izban suburban rail station. Construction is expected to begin in 2017.
