The total length of MÁV suburban railway lines is 868 km, it transports 56,6 million passengers a year, it has a HUF 12,9 billion yearly profit and operates a number of 647 trains of which 133 EMUs, 31 DMUs and 41 push-pull trains.
The overall development objective includes the S-Bahn- strategy for suburban infrastructural developments and the rolling stock development strategy developed by MÁV-Start for 2016-2026.
Within the objectives of the projects, the rail company envisages the increase of percentage of Budapest suburban passengers carried by modern vehicles, from the currently 67% to 100%. Modal shift already begun on the developed lines, according to the projects revealed by László Kormányos, Head of Businnes Development and Marketing within MÁV-Start, at the the Railway Pro Technology and Services Forum, organized by Club Feroviar and Railway PRO together with the Romanian Railway Industry Association (AIF), in Arad on 5-6 April.
MÁV-Start ebvisages a progressive vehicle renewal programme according to which all outdated vehicles will be withdrawn from the suburbs by the end of 2017 and the modernisation of 350 existing railway vehicles.
There is also an objective according to which the Hungarian rail passenger transport company will purchase new and modern EMUs. In the first phase, there will be purchased around 10-12 trainsets for the Budapest-Nyugati – Vác and Budapest-Nyugati – Monor lines. According to the second phase, there will be purchased aproximately 28-30 trainsets, to be put in commercial service on Budapest-Nyugati – Vác – Szob, Budapest-Nyugati – Monor – Cegléd, Budapest-Keleti – Nagykáta – Szolnok and Budapest-Keleti – Hatvan – Gyöngyös rail lines.
MÁV-Start is currently tendering for a further 30 high capacity EMUs, which may be of a double-deck design.
