Canada’s Government commits EUR 1.2 billion for GO RER rail project

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, announced that the Government will invest more than CAD 1.8 billion (EUR 1.26 billion) in the GO Transit Regional Express rail project in the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area, Ontario.
Along with the province’s contribution to the GO Transit Regional Express rail project, this investment will be the single largest transit project in which the federal government has ever invested‎.
“More families are choosing to settle in communities like Etobicoke – communities that allow parents to work in the big city, and allow kids to ride their bikes on the street. These communities are growing at a rapid rate, and investment in public transit needs to keep pace. That is why we’re investing in the GO rail network and over 300 additional projects in Ontario to reduce commute times, decrease air pollution, and improve the lives of millions of Ontarians,” Justin Trudeau said.
Under the EUR 9.5 billion RER project, Metrolinx will quadruple the number of trains operating outside of weekday rush-hour periods, will double the number of trips during weekday rush-hour periods and will extend the network to new communities. Under the infrastructure extension, the agency will build 150 of new tracks, new bridges and tunnels, that will eliminate intersections with rail and road traffic and will construct new stations.
In 2015 work began on building a second track on a 5 km section of the Stouffville corridor from Kennedy Road to Marilyn Avenue. This is the first part of a multi-year project that will expand and improve 17 km of corridor from Scarborough Junction to Unionville GO Station.
