India’s Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu said that is planning to save Rs 41,000 crore (USD 6,3 million) energy bill over the next decade, by setting up solar, wind and waste energy systems in railway stations.
“We plan to set up 500 MW roof-top and 500 MW land-based solar units in railway stations and properties across the country. We are also into wind energy generation with 26 MW plants and planning generation of energy from solid waste generated in railway stations and facilities,” Suresh Prabhu said explaining the plans.
This year, India’s Finance Minsiter Arun Jaitley announced that 7000 railway stations across the country will be powered by solar energy. The project “is proposed to feed at least 7,000 stations with solar power in the medium term.” The project is a part of the Indian Railways’ mission to harness 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar energy by 2020.
Works are started for power systems installation at 300 stations and the next phase of the project involves 2000 rail stations.
