Danish designers Cowi and PLH have won an international architectural tender for the development of the central railway station and the surrounding area in Riga, Latvia. The design competition is part of the Rail Baltica project.
PLH is leading the architectural design behind the transformation of the railway station, while Cowi leads a number of disciplines related to bridge design, urban planning, landscaping, traffic planning, structural principles, railway engineering, construction economics and definition of project stages. A key element of the project is the demolition of the embankment running from the river to the railway station.
“The project will link the city together and strengthen Riga’s identity. This will be done by prioritising public transit, pedestrians and cyclists to create a more sustainable city,” Cowi project director Jakob Christensen said.
