Moscow Municipality announced that by April 1st the city will receive its new-generation Vityaz-M trams, said Deputy Moscow Mayor Maxim Liksutov, Head of the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development.
Each 27.5-metre long tram has six doors on one side, including two single-section doors and four twin-section doors. Each tram has 60 seats and can carry 260 people overall.
The new six-door trams will be much quieter, with their upgraded wheel assembly offering a much smoother ride. The low-profile railcars will be more passenger-friendly and will be less felt from nearby residential buildings. The city has already purchased 300 of the new trams, Liksutov explained.
Vityaz-M trams will also feature satellite navigation, video cameras and a special climate control system in both the passenger compartment and the tram operator’s cabin.
In September 2016, Mosgortrans, the Moscow tramway operator awarded a USD 877 million contract for the supply and maintenance of 300 trams. The winner of the tender was a joint venture formed by Transmashholding subsidiary Metrowagonmash and PK Transport Systems.
The new trams will be delivered starting with 2017 until 2019, with 100 vehicle per year.
In March, the Moscow transport department said that the city is going to build separate tram tracks on 24 streets. The city began creating the first separated tram tracks last year on Khalturinskaya, Pervomaiskaya and Kostyakova streets and also on Chistoprudny Boulevard. These tracks were equipped with photo and video cameras and road markings that are used for designated transit lanes. These measures increased average tram speeds by 3 to 5 percent during peak hours and by 20 to 30 percent at other times. Two elevated and safe passenger platforms have been built on Chistoprudny Boulevard under the My Street programme.
