Indian Railways intends to launch a trans-continental container train from Dhaka, Bangladesh, to Istanbul, covering a 6000-km distance across five countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey.
An important issue of the project is that a long-missing link of 150 km in Zahedan (Iran) has now completed, making the further Trans-Asian Railway Southern Corridor good-to-go all the way to Turkey after certain operational exchange of notes and coordination between the concerned countries happens.
Named “ITI-DKD-Y corridor”, the route will run from Dhaka, through Kolkata, Delhi, Islamabad, Tehran and will arrive in Istanbul. The
According to Mohammad Jamshed, Traffic Board Member at Indian Railways, the pilot train should be launched this year, and soon the heads of railway companies who are involved in the project will meet to discuss all project’s issues. “It’s a great step for South Asian regional connectivity in the rail sector. This will also demonstrate to the world that there can be a real, commercial trans-Asian container corridor of this magnitude in the rail sector,” he said.
