Malaysia: KTMB introduces railway inspection system

Japanese railway system provider Meidensha has delivered an Overhead Catenary System (OCS) inspection system (catenary eye) for track maintenance to Malaysia’s state-owned rail company Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB). Meidensha’s catenary eye consists of a high-speed camera, laser sensor and LED illumination linked to a computer. The visual imaging and data provided will enable maintenance engineers to monitor the condition of rail tracks remotely.
The system is provided for free under Malaysia’s industrial collaboration program. In return Meidensha is able to participate in the country’s mass rapid transit (MRT) project.
By using the catenary eye mounted on a maintenance vehicle, KTMB can inspect at least 480 km of rail track in an eight-hour period, compared to the current 2 km using manual labor. “The system will save us a lot of money,” Zailani Safari, CEO of Technology Depository Agency Berhad (TDA), said.
