Russian Railways (RZD) intends to offer Japan a project for the construction of a railway line from Russia to Japan, running from Sakhalin Island to Hokkaido Island, at it was revealed during a Russian Railways’ presentation made during the Russian-Japanese business dialogue in Tokyo.
Potential cargo turnover at this section of the area will amount to 31.8 million tons by 2030, as the presentation showed.
“An expert group intends to develop this project, which includes a feasibility study, for the purpose to look at a synergistic effect produced by this project,” a Vice-President of the Russian Railways, Vyacheslav Pavlovsky, said.
In addition, a railway from Sakhalin to mainland Russia connecting with the Trans-Siberian Railway may be constructed.
