Isa Apaydın, the General Manager of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) announced that works are going well and a certain speed on the rail line was reached. Accordingly, the Gebze-Halkalı high speed railway line will enter commercial service in 2018. The line will ensure a complementary rail connection to the Marmaray line. Gebze is located on the Asian side of Turkey and Halkalı is located on the European side. The length of the line is 152 kilometres.
The procurement of new rolling stock for suburban passenger traffic is also part of the project.
The high speed line between Gebze and Halkalı connects all high speed trains from all over Turkey to European side of Istanbul via 3rd Bridge (Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge).
Conventional passenger trains will run this line as it is also expected to be used for city connections (from Gebze and Halkalı) and between the two airports.
Turkish State Railways (TCDD) did not decide yet whether freight trains will run this line or not.
