Ethiopia – Djibouti rail operator to be established

ethiopiaEthiopia and Djibouti have entered an agreement on the establishment of a joint company which will manage the new line built.
The company will be headquartered in Addis Ababa, and will have the responsibility to provide passengers, freight and maintenance services for the route, according to the agreement.
Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport, Ahmed Shide and his Djiboutian counterpart, Mohammed Abdulkadir Musa, signed the agreement after a negotiation that took more than a year.
In 5 October 2016, the 750 km line linking Addis Ababa and Djibouti was inaugurated. The USD 3.4 billion project was mostly financed by China and it was constructed by the China Railway Group and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.
