Polish Railway Lines (PKP PLK) and Torpol have signed the contract for the modernisation of Katowice – Kraków and Kraków Mydlniki – Kraków Główny Towarowy rail sections, in Katowice agglomeration. These sections are part of E30 railway line. The value of the contract is PLN 300 million (EUR 67.6 million) and it is supported under EU’s cofinancing for the facilitation of rail travel within the agglomeration and the regional and long-distance travel.
The modernisation works are scheduled for the end on 2016 and will be completed in 2018. The completion of the entire Katowice – Kraków railway line is planned for 2020.
“The implementation of the project will not only shorten the time travel from Katowice to Kraków, but also will improve communication in Kraków agglomeration. We are focused to develop railway projects in urban areas and our investments will exceed PLN 2 billion (EUR 451 million) in the capital of Małopolska Voivodeship, and similar projects will be implemented in Warsaw Poznan and Rzeszów,” said Ireneusz Merchel President of the Management Board.
An important project in Kraków involves the construction of a railway viaduct that will replace the level crossings on L. Rydel street, improving safety, rail and public transport. On the entire route, PKP PLK will rebuild 5 rail viaducts involving 17 km of rail track and rail traffic control devices.
