Utrecht to buy new LRVs

utrecht-tram_imgp1804_169More travels will be available from 2020 for passengers using the light rail between Utrecht Science Park / De Uithof, Utrecht CS, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein. From that moment there is one continuous connection over the entire process. All stops have been adjusted and the railway line in IJsselstein and Nieuwegein-Zuid is renewed. There will also be new, longer trams.

The Dutch province of Utrecht announced that it has made a preliminary decision to convert Utrecht’s Nieuwegein/IJsselstein Fast Tram, or Sneltram, (SUNIJ) to a conventional light rail line by 2020, modernising infrastructure and replacing the ageing tram fleet with new low-floor LRVs.

The choice of an integrated tram system is also dictated by unavoidable investments. So all tram stops have in Utrecht, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein be customized to fit in with the new type of low-floor tram ride that goes from 2018. In addition, a replacement of the tram fleet is necessary because the current trams around 2020 are at the end of their service life. Therefore the province wants to order the commission of 22 new trams. These new trams will be significantly longer. The trams will drive coupled with an overall length of 75 meters. Per trip, this capacity will increase for about 490 passengers. The extra capacity is needed to meet the growth in the number of passengers in public transport for the period up to 2030. This growth is expected particularly in the new Uithof Line. The total cost of infrastructure works is estimated to be EUR 141 million.

The Provincial Council of Utrecht will analyse this proposal on December 12, 2016.
