Vienna’s rail operator Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo has ordered 3 new Traxx AC3 locomotives from Bombardier that will be used in Europe. Under the contract, 6 Traxx locomotives will be purchased. In addition to the usual electric drive, the new locomotives will also be equipped with a last-mile function, involving the installment of a diesel engine in the locomotive that will allow shunting services on non-electrified sidings. This means that no additional diesel locomotive is necessary for the carriage shift in areas without an overhead line.
Next year, the three new locomotives will be put into service on German and Austrian rail network.
Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo mainly organises multi-modal block train transportation throughout Europe. The range of services offered is being increasingly supplemented by international shipments of conventional wagon loads as part of a block train. The company is one of the leading providers of private rail cargo services in Austria.
