DB Schenker Rail Polska launches projects for optimising port traffic

Poland is the second largest rail transport market in Europe and plays an important role on the East-West transport corridor due to its strategic location. In this environment, DB Schenker Rail Polska (DB SR Polska) is DB Schenker Rail’s main pillar all around Eastern Europe. Only a year after the German group took over the operator, the company initiated several activities which contributed to the strengthening of its position on the Polish market and on the East-European market respectively.

The company focuses on diversifying the transport offer by entering new market segments such as transport of biomass, timber and chemicals. In parallel, the operator was able to start single wagon service. A new product, Silesia Line Train, (regular service train linking Silesia to Western Europe via Germnay) developed together with DB Schenker Rail Deutschland turned out very successful and gained more recognition among customers. As a result of its success the company is planning to continue with similar products. According to this strategy the company already implemented 24 hour-customer services. “Our strategy is aimed at quality. Becoming a premium rail service provider means reliable services and tailored logistics solutions”, declared for Railway Pro, Hans-Georg Werner, the CEO of DB Schenker Rail Polska. Moreover, it wants to increase the hinterland traffic from sea ports. In co-operation with the port authorities, the company will therefore invest EUR 22.5 Million by 2018 in port terminals at the Polish Baltic Sea ports of Szczecin and Swinoujscie. With this investment, the company is aiming to significantly increase transshipment capacity in the medium term, and to participate in the growth of distribution of goods via ports. This is a part of DB “Green Logistics” program and the company’s contribution in shifting more traffic from road to rail. The future of rail activity will be determined by cross-border traffic. Poland as a transit country will be a platform to develop more rail services on the East-West routes. Within the last six months, the company has increased the amount of traffic on those routes, primarily transporting coal, timber, building materials and automotive parts. In addition, it will be vital to diversify its products portfolio, for which the company is currently working on new offer directed towards other industries.“Having clear strategy and well-defined goals we can plan further company development as we know the directions we need to follow. Only this way we can improve our image, reach long term profitability, and thereby become an attractive employer”, declared Christian Schreyer, Board Member of DB Schenker Rail Polska.
