Balfour Beatty wins USD 697 million Caltrain electrification contract

caltrainBalfour Beatty has been awarded a USD 697 million contract to undertake electrification of the 83.6 km Caltrain rail corridor between San Francisco and San Jose, laying the foundations for the future operation of high speed trains.
Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Inc. will design and build a 25kv AC overhead catenary system to serve as the power source for the new high speed trains and construct two traction power substations, one switching substation and seven paralleling substations.
The project is due to start this autumn with completion expected in spring 2020.
In July, Caltrain Board has approved USD 1.25 billion contracts begin work on the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project. The contract for design and construction of the corridor’s electrification infrastructure was awarded to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. The contract for the manufacture of high-performance electric trains was awarded to Stadler US, Inc.
The Caltrain’s Modernization Program includes the electrification of the San Francisco – San Jose existing corridor, the installation of the Communications Based Overlay Signal System Positive Train Control signaling of Diesel trains system and the replacement with electric ones. The first stage of the program requires investments of USD 1.76 billion, while the second one requires investments of USD 624 million.
The purchase of electric railcars is one of Caltrain’s most important projects and would replace 75% of the diesel vehicle fleet operating along the San Francisco – San Jose line.
