The opening of the railway line between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem may be delayed for an entire year for repair of defects detected in the service tunnels. The repair works are estimated to cost between NIS 14 and 50 million (3.3-11.7 million euros).
A team of Dutch experts, hired by the Ministry of Transport, has found deficiencies in project planning and implementation. These deficiencies have caused 33 out of 46 service tunnels excavated along the tunnel from Sha’ar HaGai to Mevasseret Zion to remain vulnerable to cracks, breaking floors and even collapse.
The Tel Aviv-Jerusalem railway line project is estimated at over NIS 6 billion (1.4 billion euros). After repeated delays in the past few years, the launch date of this project is currently 2018.
