Transport Ministries from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia have signed a letter of intent that was sent to the European Commission on the establishment of a new rail freight corridor, No. 11, called Amber Road.
The aim of the establishment of freight corridor No. 11 is to promote railway transport as a mean of transport in international freight system, to improve the competitiveness of rail transport and to use in a better way the existing capacity for international freight transport. A close cooperation between the ministries, infrastructure managers and railway authorities from Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary should ensure the effective achievement of the goal.
The meeting between the four countries was organized by the PKP Polish Railway Lines and initiated by the infrastructure managers. The cooperation will enable the creation of a corridor management structure, the development of the necessary documents and the elaboration of a joint offer in terms of allocation of infrastructure capacity to operate international freight traffic.
‘Creating a new freight corridor, that will connect Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia is an opportunity to develop a new quality of freight transport. The “Amber” Corridor will strengthen the cooperation and will improve rail transport in Europe,’ Andrzej Pawlowski, Vice President of PKP PLK said.
The Corridor is to be launched at the end of 2018, but depends on the decision of the European Commission. The planned Corridor No. 11 roughly follows the ancient trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
