Official green light for Lyon-Turin HSR

agreementFrance Transport Minister Alain Vidalies and his Italian counterpart Graziano Delrio, signed an additional protocol for the Lyon-Turin HSR construction. The document was accompanied by a letter to the European Commission, applying for European funding.
With an estimated value of about EUR 8.4 billion, the project is envisaged to be funded by the European Union at 40%, with the remaining 60% split between France (42.1%) and Italy (57.9%).
The 220 km/h high speed line will service both passengers and freight. The first trains are expected to depart in 2028-2029. The 57-km tunnel under the Alps will be longer than the Channel Tunnel, while the line as a whole will shorten the trip between Milan and Paris by train from 7 to 4 hours.
The French-Italian TELT (Tunnel Euralpin Lyon-Turin) company, chosen to realise the trans-border section of the line, said that it is ready to move ahead with the construction procedures for the tunnel.
