In order to improve its operational efficiency, the Chennai Port Trust plans to raise container shipping by rail by 25 per cent. “Currently, about seven per cent of shipment of containers are handled by the railways. We expect that to increase by 25 per cent,” Chennai Port Trust Deputy Chairman Cyril V George said.
With this aim, Distribution Logistics Infrastructure started transporting the first batch of containers by train from the port. Trains will be operated from Jawahar Dock on the port premises. Distribution Logistics Infrastructure will increase services in future from two trains a week to four trains. Each train can carry about 70 TEUs. As part of handling containers, the Chennai Port will set up a “full-fledged common railway yard”.
The Chennai Port Trust handled 1.50 million TEUs in financial year 2014-2015.
