Tender for Port Alsancak privatization opens in 2016

Alsancak-portThe tender for privatization of Turkish largest export seaport Port Alsancak, located in the western Turkish province Izmir, will be opened in the beginning of 2016. The Turkish government and Chamber of Shipping modified the zoning plans, which will be given on concession and the exact borders will be announced in the beginning of 2016. According to the current information the concession zones will have an area of 130 thousand sq m and except development of port infrastructure in the region will be built trade, commercial and logistic centers. After modernization of the port is expected to handle and operate 3 million TEU per year.
The port is controlled by the Turkish State Railways and first attempt for privatization was made in 2006. Then a consortium offered USD1.275 billion for privatization, but the delayed procedure and bureaucracy rebuffed investors, who were affected by the ongoing economic crisis worldwide. The continued delay in privatization was followed by lack of investors into the port, which followed to ruining of infrastructure and delay in development. The Turkish Ministry of Transport started renovation program for the infrastructure and equipment, investing USD300 million, making Port Alsancak more attractive for operators.
