Luxemburg company CLdN (formerly Cobelfret) decided to launch a direct shipping and rail connection from the UK to Duisburg as of this year.
“CLdN decided to focus on Duisburg for two reasons. Firstly, there are a lot of chemical companies in the Duisburg region that export to the UK. Secondly, Duisburg serves as a hub for other European destinations,” said CLdN Cargo’s Corporate Sales Manager Eric Staal. This combination yields a sizeable transport volume of some 800 to 1,000 TEU per month, making the realisation of a high-frequency rail connection in partnership with operator DistriRail a profitable venture.
Both DistriRail and other parties have been providing high-frequency services from both Maasvlakte and Waalhaven for some time. What makes this particular concept unique is that it provides a direct rail connection with CLdN’s RoRo services. “This allows logistics companies that use swap bodies and huckepack trailers for door-to-door transport to take optimum advantage of the direct link with the Cobelfret terminal. Previously, they were still required to arrange an extra transport run from Waalhaven. Thanks to this new concept, we have now eliminated these additional costs of approximately 100 euro per cargo unit.”
