State-owned rail operator SNCF’s newly ordered TGV high speed trains are too tall to fit in Italy’s tunnels. The new trains are several milimetres higher than the maximum height of the tunnels along the Riviera coastline route.
Consequently, French cross-Europe trains will have to stop before entering Italy, where passengers will have to board a smaller train.
SNCF says the trains will be put into service this week, but only as far as the French border.
