JR East has announced a new international tender for the procurement of 63 new-type electric-diesel railcars for the Niigata and Akita areas.
The company hopes to receive many applications from all over the world and to deepen dialogue with best-in-class manufacturers. Applications are open until 24 July 2015.
The total 63 railcars to be procured comprising in 1-car trainset (19 cars) composed of 19 trains and 2-car trainsets (44 cars) composed of 22 trains.
The new railcars will be electric-diesel railcars with motors powered by electrical generators and diesel engines. In order to ensure high-quality, safe and stable transport services, JR East will require the use of a number of electric railcar related technologies that JR East has already adopted and developed.
The company plans to introduce these vehicle in fiscal year 2018-2020, in Niigata area, and in 2021 in Akita area.
This tender is the first step in a wider procurement plan for approximately 150 to 250 new-type electric-diesel railcars (including the above 63 railcars), which will replace JR East’s existing diesel railcars.
